Bag media is the right call when your dust stream is not one clean particle size. A rip saw throws heavy chip, a random-orbit sander throws fine dust, and a shaper throws something in between. How it works
Why bag media suits mixed dust.
Bag filtration is chosen for one reason above all others: it tolerates a dust stream that changes character machine to machine, shift to shift.
Bag filtration works by pulling dust-laden air through a woven or felted fabric tube. Particulate builds a thin cake on the fabric surface as air passes through, and that cake itself becomes part of the filtering surface, improving capture efficiency the longer a bag runs between cleanings. This is different from cartridge media, which relies on a pleated, high-surface-area element tuned mainly for fine, dry particulate, and different again from a sleeve, which uses a lighter fabric better suited to steady, moderate loads.
The reason bag media is the Icon Bag's technology of choice is the dust profile a mixed woodworking line actually produces. Ripping and planing throw coarse chip that would blind a cartridge filter quickly, while sanding and profiling throw fine dust that a coarse screen would pass straight through.
