Sawmill production starts in the log yard, where a debarker strips bark before the log reaches the headrig for primary breakdown. From there, cants and flitches move to the resaw and edger to be cut to width, then to trim saws for length. Rough lumber continues to the planer mill for surfacing before it reaches the green chain for sorting.
Every one of those stations, from debarker to planer, is throwing coarse waste rather than fine dust, and the mill runs it continuously through a shift rather than in the intermittent bursts typical of a custom woodshop.
A mill does not have one dust source. It has a chain of them, and each stage hands something coarser or cleaner to the next.

The first is quantity. A headrig and resaw working through a full shift move more bulk material than an indoor woodshop process will produce in a week, and the system has to keep pace with that output continuously instead of absorbing the occasional peak. In practice that argues for bulk handling and pre-separation ahead of final filtration rather than for piling on filter area.
The second is where the equipment has to live. Log yard plant sits outdoors year-round, so housings, access doors and controls have to survive weather an indoor collector never meets, and service points have to stay usable in rain and through a winter rather than only on a clear day.
The third is that the mill does not stop. A line running shift-long without a pause needs hopper capacity and access designed for work between runs rather than during them, because an unplanned stop here is expensive in a way that a stop in a custom shop is not.
The fourth is housekeeping, which outdoors is a job in itself. Bark and coarse fines pile up around conveyors and walking surfaces faster than fine dust settles indoors, and that is both an access problem and a slip hazard. Wood dust and bark fines are also a recognized combustible dust hazard in general terms, which is reason enough to keep accumulation off equipment and structural surfaces rather than letting it grow between cleanups.
It helps to say what a mill is not. Panel saw dust collection deals with the opposite material, a small quantity of very fine resin-bonded dust where filtration grade decides everything. The closest relative to a mill is moulder and planer dust extraction, which has the same bulk-material problem at a smaller scale, and the planer mill at the end of the line has more in common with that page than with the headrig upstream of it. Shops working a mill's output rather than the log will find the sizing logic on millwork dust collection systems closer to their own.
Throughput at the headrig and resaw sets everything downstream, so the free factory visit starts there and works back out to the yard.
