Millwork Dust Collection System

Millwork and joinery covers architectural work built to order: staircases, entry doors, window sash and bespoke mouldings rather than a repeating production line. A typical shop runs single-end tenoners for joinery cuts, shapers and spindle moulders for profiles, multi-head moulders for longer trim runs, and CNC boring machines for stair parts, alongside a hand-fed table saw for one-off cuts that do not justify programming a machine.

Because each job can call for a different combination of those machines, the shop rarely settles into one steady dust pattern. A staircase order might run the moulder hard for two days, then sit idle while the same parts move to assembly and finishing.

Built Around Changeover

Everything difficult about this application comes back to one thing: the shop will be laid out differently next month.

A production line earns its ductwork. The same parts run through the same machines every day, so a duct layout that is right on the first day stays right. A millwork shop does not work like that. One project has the moulder running continuously for two days; the next leaves it cold while the tenoner and the boring machine carry the order.

So the design question here is reconfiguration rather than raw capacity. Flexible ductwork and blast gates that can be reset as machines move around the floor will serve a changeover-heavy shop better than a single-purpose run sized around whichever job happens to be in the building this week.

Reconfiguration only counts if the shop can actually do it. Gates an operator can reach, duct sections that come apart without cutting, and a layout somebody can reset at the start of a job are worth more here than extra filter area sitting unused.

The material matters as much as the layout. Moulders and shapers cutting architectural profiles remove stock as continuous shavings rather than as fine dust, and a short custom run can put out a large volume of them in a few hours. A system built around fine dust alone will not keep pace with what one moulding job generates in an afternoon.

Species mixing is the wrinkle that catches shops out. Walnut on Monday and a light maple stair on Tuesday means whatever the first job left sitting in the ductwork is available to travel into the second. Capturing at the machine, and clearing the runs between jobs, is what keeps a dark species out of a light one.

For a shop running a handful of machines on short orders, a compact modular sleeve platform is usually the right starting point, with capacity added as the work gets larger. Shops where the moulder is the bottleneck should read moulder and planer dust extraction, and shops drifting toward repeat production will find the sizing logic on furniture manufacturing dust collection closer to their own.
