Outdoor Dust Collectors for High Volume Plants

An outdoor dust collector puts the filtration equipment, the fan noise and the stored dust load on the other side of a wall. Both Coral outdoor models use sleeve filtration built for exterior installation and for waste volumes an indoor unit cannot practically handle.

Why outside

Volume decides it. Not preference.

Nobody moves a collector outdoors for the fun of it. It happens when the waste stream gets big enough that an indoor unit would need emptying more often than anyone will actually empty it, or when the floor the unit occupies is worth more as production space than the heat that indoor filtration saves.

Once that decision is made the benefits compound. Fan noise leaves the shop. The dust, the most explosible material in a wood plant, is stored outside the production envelope. And one external unit can serve a whole line, or several buildings, on a single main.

The range

Two outdoor collectors.

Both are sleeve units. Cleaning method and fan arrangement are what separate them. Airflow and dimensions are available on request.

Four things change the day it goes outside.

Two of these are why you moved the unit. The other two are the bill for doing it.

Air

Make-up air and heat

Extracted air leaves the building unless return ducting is designed in, and that volume has to be replaced by make-up air that needs heating. It is the strongest reason to check whether an indoor unit could still work.

Weather and access

The unit is built for exterior duty. The people servicing it are not. Filter access, discharge changes and bagging off all have to be safe in rain and cold, which means platform access and lighting at design stage.

Fire and explosion separation

Storing the collected dust outside the production envelope is one of the strongest risk reductions available to a wood plant. It also brings the relief path and the wall penetrations into the design scope.

Noise, but somewhere else

Fan noise comes off the shop floor, which operators notice immediately. What replaces it is a noise source at the building line, so confirm what sits beyond that wall before the pad is poured.

The collector is rarely the difficult part. The route between the machines and the collector usually is.

Duct run length is a fan selection problem

Every extra meter of duct, every bend and every branch adds resistance the fan has to overcome. A unit sited on the far corner of the site because that was the convenient patch of concrete quietly costs you capture velocity at the hood, which is the only place it matters. Position is a performance decision, not a facilities one.

Plan the discharge before the filter

On a high volume outdoor system the constraint is almost never filtration. It is how the collected material leaves the hopper and where it goes: bulk bags, a bin, a container or a conveyor. Whichever it is, somebody reaches it with a forklift mid shift, so that access has to exist on the pad from day one.

Design the return path if the building is heated

Where the climate makes exhausting that air expensive, return ducting can bring filtered air back inside. It adds cost and a filtration grade requirement, because that air goes back to people. Whether it pays depends on your climate and shift pattern, and deserves a real calculation rather than a guess.

Two approaches

One central unit, or one per group.

Both are common. Which suits you depends on how much of the plant runs at once.

One central collector

A single outdoor unit serving the whole plant on a shared main. Fewer filters to maintain, one discharge point and the lowest cost per unit of airflow. The trade is that everything depends on one machine, and adding capacity later means revisiting the fan and the main.

Dedicated to a machine group

An outdoor unit sized for the heaviest group, usually breakdown or moulding, with lighter machines on a separate indoor collector. Duct runs stay short, the dust streams stay separate and losing one system does not stop the plant. It costs more to install and maintain.

What is an outdoor dust collector used for?

It filters wood dust and chip drawn from machines inside the building through ductwork, with the collector standing outside. That keeps the equipment, the noise and the collected dust off the production floor, which is why it is standard on sawmills and plant wide central systems.

Do you lose heated air with an outdoor dust collector?

You can, and it is the main cost of siting outside. Extracted air is exhausted to atmosphere unless return ducting is designed in, and it has to be replaced by make-up air that then needs heating. If that dominates the numbers, look again at the indoor dust collector range.

Does an outdoor dust collector need a foundation or an enclosure?

It needs a prepared level base sized for the unit and safe access for filter and discharge work in all weather. A full enclosure is usually unnecessary, but prevailing wind, drainage and where the discharge sits relative to doors and fresh air intakes all need checking on site.

Can one outdoor collector serve machines in more than one building?

Yes, and that is often the reason to go outside. A single external unit can serve several buildings on a shared main. The limits are duct run length and the static pressure that comes with it, so the fan is selected against the whole layout rather than the machine list alone.
