A panel enters at one end and leaves finished at the other. Between those two points it passes four separate groups of heads, and every group needs hooding.
Adhesive goes on and the banding material is pressed to the panel edge. Nothing is being cut yet, but this is where the glue that later shows up in the airstream enters the process.
End trimming units cut the banding flush at the leading and trailing edges of the panel, releasing short offcuts and dust at a fixed point on the machine.
Trimming units above and below take the overhang off along the length of the panel, and corner rounding on machines equipped for it adds one more head to hood.
Scraping removes what the trimmers left behind and a buffing unit polishes the finished edge. These are the last two pickups before the panel leaves the machine.
A through-feed edge bander combines end trimming, top and bottom trimming, corner rounding, scraping and buffing in one pass, and each of those stations needs its own hood on the same machine rather than one pickup for the whole line.
Yes, glue residue in the extracted stream can bind to filter media over time in a way that plain wood dust does not, so filters on an edge banding system often need more frequent attention than on a dry-cutting machine.
More often than a plain sawdust application, since adhesive residue in the airstream can build up on filter media faster than dry wood dust, so service intervals should be set around the glue load rather than a generic schedule.
Both, and they come off different heads. The trimming units release short pieces of banding along with dust, while scraping and buffing produce a much finer stream, so the pickups along the machine are not all handling the same material.
It can. What leaves the trimmers is whatever the banding is made of plus the substrate underneath it, so a shop running one banding type all day presents a steadier load than one switching materials across short orders.
Every other machine in the building sends the collector wood and nothing else. A bander sends wood plus whatever came out of the glue pot, because the trimming heads are cutting through banding that was adhered seconds earlier and the scraper is taking off squeeze-out along with it.

A banded edge is one of the few surfaces on a finished panel that somebody runs a hand along, and it gets its final appearance inside the machine rather than later in a finishing room. If dust lands on that edge in the short gap between the scraper and the buffing head, the buff works it in instead of taking it off, and the panel leaves the bander with the defect already built into it.
That is the case for hooding the trimmers and the scraper properly rather than putting one large pickup at the outfeed end and calling the machine covered. Capture at the stations upstream is what leaves a clean edge for the head that finishes it.
Panels normally reach the bander already sized, so the upstream half of this problem sits on panel saw dust collection, where the material is the same board and the failure mode is completely different.
